Enraged Mother Finds Withdrawal From Methadone Treatment Worst Than the Heroin Effects

Released on = December 23, 2005, 4:55 am

Press Release Author = Narconon Vancouver Society

Industry = Healthcare

Press Release Summary = After considerable research and efforts to send her son to a
rehab program that has proven effective against heroin effects, the correctional
service of Canada denied the mother and her son their request, and left them with
methadone treatment as their only option.

Press Release Body = Vancouver, British Columbia – December 22, 2005 – In 10 years,
he’s tried a countless number of recovery houses, rehab centers and detox programs.
When his mother finally found a rehab center that is effective against heroin addiction, the Correctional Service of Canada put a snag in her plan to help her
son.

One month after their 28 years old son, Michael, arrived home from jail, his parents
once again became desperate for answers to fight Michael’s addiction to heroin, as
he began stealing from them.

On November 2004, they learned about the Narconon Rehab program which proved
effective against heroin, and many other drugs.

Michael said: “I'm particularly attracted to their sauna detoxification program; it
erases the long-term effects of heroin, including the cravings, depression and, the
severe anxiety I feel when I'm off drugs.”

His mother quickly made the necessary arrangements so Michael could begin treatment,
but she encountered a brick wall—he was on parole.

The Narconon Rehab center was outside his province and The parole office refused
Michael’s request to leave the province. Their excuse was that his cravings had
made him unstable.

His parole officer offered Michael the methadone treatment as an alternative
solution. Michael, not able to deal with his cravings, decided to try the program.

Unfortunately, methadone does not prevent drug users from using other drugs such as
crack or cocaine.

While on methadone, Michael used cocaine several times, and returned to jail twice
for failing his drug test.

His mother was afraid of losing Michael to the street and wanted to send him to
Narconon as soon as possible. So she encouraged Michael to wean down from
methadone.

Narconon can help alleviate the withdrawal symptoms of most drugs by using natural
methods and vitamins, but the methadone treatment could not be stopped abruptly
without severe health risk to the drug user.

Michael had to slowly wean down his dosage under the supervision of a doctor with a
methadone license, before going to the Narconon center.

He knew he would feel some pain since he stopped using drugs many times in the past,
but did not realize that the withdrawal symptoms of methadone were 3 to 5 time worst
than heroin.

After 2 seizures and a great deal of efforts from his family and his doctor, Michael
gave up and requested that his methadone dosage be increased. The family was
enraged and wondered how this “solution to heroin” was ever approved as a treatment.

They later discovered that 1 out of 5 drug user that start the methadone treatment
cannot stop the program. Some drug users stay on the program as long as 7 years and
still cannot end the program.

Today, Michael still struggles with his methadone dependency, and the family is
still looking for creative ways to help him get off this “treatment” and provide him
with real help against addiction.
